CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 81 calls from Dec. 18 to Jan. 8, some of which included:
- eight 911 Act calls,
- two abandoned vehicles,
- two arsons,
- one assault,
- eight breaches of peace,
- one breach of recognizance,
- three Coroners Act calls,
- one criminal harassment,
- one disturbing the peace,
- one failure to stop or remain at an accident scene,
- three false alarms,
- two Family Law Act calls,
- one fraud,
- one impaired operation of a motor vehicle,
- six Mental Health Act calls,
- three mischiefs,
- two other provincial calls,
- one sextortion,
- one sexual assault,
- four suspicious persons,
- five traffic collisions,
- 13 traffic offences,
- one uttering threats, and
- nine wellbeing checks.
Wellness check, resident found alive and well
On Dec. 22, the Canora RCMP were asked to do a wellness check on a woman in Canora after neighbours reported concerns for the wellbeing of the home’s occupant. Police entered the home after there was no answer at the door or the phone. The woman was found inside alive and well.
Sibling love?
A woman called the Canora RCMP on Dec. 23 reporting her brother had put pet deworming medication in her spaghetti. Police investigated and were unable to substantiate the deworming accusations. Police provided advice to both the brother and sister on how to better get along.
Suspicious fires
The Canora RCMP received a report of a structure fire at an abandoned home in Mikado on Nov. 27. On Dec. 25, a second fire was reported at an abandoned church and on Jan. 1, a third fire was reported at an abandoned building in Mikado. The residence and the two buildings did not have occupants at the time of the fires. Based on evidence police have gathered, these three fires are suspicious in nature and may be related.
As part of the investigation, RCMP checked the surrounding area for witnesses and video captured. Officers collected footage of a white GMC Envoy in Mikado at the time of the house fire on Nov. 27. Anyone with information about this incident, or who recognizes the suspect SUV, is asked to report it to police by calling 310-RCMP. Snow dispute
On Dec. 28, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a disturbance in Canora. The caller reported the neighbour had shoveled snow onto their property. An argument ensued when the neighbour was asked not to put snow on the caller’s property. Police assisted and mediated the dispute.
Sextortion reported
The Canora RCMP investigated a sextortion on Dec. 31. The caller reported being contacted by an unknown man with an accent asking for money after sending intimate images to a Snapchat account that the caller believed belonged to a woman. The investigation is ongoing.
Disoriented caller
On Jan. 4, a mamcalled 911 reporting he was held captive in a church in Hazel Dell by two unknown men. Police investigated and learned the man was an elderly patient at a local hospital and there was no actual emergency.
Assistance needed
The Canora RCMP were dispatched on Jan. 7 to Buchanan for a wellness check on an elderly man. Police entered the home and found the man on the ground in need of medical help. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.
