PREECEVILLE — Moving away from home and setting out to chart your own future is a tough journey, but Camryn Nelson of Preeceville is excelling. In her first year of university at the University of Saskatchewan, where she is enroled in pre-pharmacy, she was crowned No. 1 in Western Canada and No. 8 in Canada in the shot put during the Sanderson Classic, a university-level track meet in Saskatoon on January 9 and 10.
Nelson is no stranger to the event. During her high school years, she excelled by winning a silver medal in Grade 9, gold medals in Grades 10 and 11, and a silver medal in Grade 12 at provincial meets.
She graduated from Preeceville High School in 2025, and her passion for shot put followed her into her university journey. She decided to join the university track team this fall and has been working tirelessly for hours with a coach, practising in and out of the gym, all while juggling the challenges of her studies and the pressure of building her own life.
She has also taken up the weight throw and is learning the fundamentals of the discipline.
Nelson’s goals for the future include qualifying for the youth nationals at the university level. To do so, she must throw the shot put between 13 and 15 metres to earn a gold ticket to advance. There are eight members on her throwing team and 110 athletes on the University of Saskatchewan track team.
“I am so excited to start this new adventure in my life with the support of my family and friends,” said Nelson. “This entire experience has been the best in my life, and I am looking forward to where I go.”
