Cash Lanigan was the overtime hero Wednesday night, burying a breakaway with 1:10 left in extra time to lift the Yorkton Terriers to a 4-3 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Wednesday night at the Westland Insurance Arena.
Yorkton controlled much of the play early, outshooting La Ronge 20-7 in the first period and opening the scoring when Thomas Ries wired home his 15th of the season off a feed from Gavin Bartha.
The Ice Wolves answered in the second on a Dayton Tailfeathers glove-side snap shot, and after a scoreless stretch of special teams, the game headed to the third tied 1-1.
La Ronge grabbed the lead shorthanded early in the third on a goal from former Terrier Quinn Tavender. But Yorkton responded quickly — Austin Horbachewsky stripped a defender and scored shorthanded to tie it, before Jye Zawatsky gave the Terriers a 3-2 lead with a highlight-reel toe-drag backhand for his 24th of the year.
Tailfeathers struck again late with just over two minutes left in regulation for the Ice Wolves to force overtime.
In the extra frame, Lanigan raced down the left wing and slid the puck five-hole for his 14th of the season and the game-winner.
Callum Creig made 23 saves for his league-leading 24th win, while Riley Zezel was strong in defeat with 36 stops. Evan Cook had three assists for La Ronge, and Bartha chipped in two points for Yorkton.
Yorkton returns to action Friday night at home against the Hawks.
