A public inquest into the Nov. 2022 death of a woman in Moosomin is set to run from Mar. 30 to Apr. 2 at the Canalta in Moosomin.
The inquest will examine the death of 50-year-old Karen Ireland, who was taken to the Moosomin Integrated Care Centre by RCMP officers on Nov. 22, 2022, under the Mental Health Services Act.
A release from the province says Ireland was admitted, placed in a secure room, and allowed to go outside unsupervised.
She was last seen in the front foyer of the Care Centre on the morning of Nov. 23, 2022, and when she could not be found in her room or outside, a missing person’s report was was initiated, however she was found dead that afternoon outside, about half a kilometre from the facility.
Inquests are held whenever a person dies while in custody, to determine the cause and circumstances of the death, while the inquest jury may make recommendations on how a similar incident could be prevented in the future.
