YORKTON – With the York Road reconstruction now complete, Yorkton city council has signed off on the next step, securing federal infrastructure funding tied to the project’s stormwater upgrades.
At its Feb. 23 meeting, council approved the submission of the York Road Reconstruction – Stormwater Upgrades Infrastructure Investment Plan under the Canada Community-Building Fund.
Mayor Aaron Kienle said the construction work itself has already been completed, but the funding process requires updated documentation.
“The work has been done on York Road and the money’s been spent, but there is an annual allocation that comes back through this Build Canada fund.”
Kienle said the revised submission is largely procedural and that the project has already received approval in principle.
“They’re just wanting that application resubmitted so that they can approve it. For the most part, it’s approved in principle. It was just a matter of some paperwork and we’re getting close to deadline time on that.”
The portion of the project being submitted totals $6,844,562 and represents the drainage ditch and storm pipe components of the contract.
According to the latest municipal summary statement from the Canada Community-Building Fund, the city has $7,756,271.25 in unallocated funding available.
By directing the majority of that allocation toward the York Road stormwater upgrades, administration expects the city will meet reporting requirements, secure payments under the fund through 2028 and be able to cover the cost of the drainage ditch and storm pipe with the funding.
