CANORA – “Enter a ladies team, men’s team or mixed team.”
With that in mind, the Jack & Jill Bonspiel hosted by the Canora Curling Club on March 5-8 attracted a total of eight teams from Canora and surrounding area.
“The club was very pleased with the event,” said President Terry Wilson. “It was a small turnout but everyone had a lot of fun.”
In the A Event final, the Ken Newell rink of Norquay defeated the Terry Dennis foursome from Crystal Lake.
Prior to that, the teams were split into two groups, with each team playing three round robin games against each of the other teams in their group. During round robin play the Brandon Draw format was in effect, awarding 10 points for a win, five for a tie, and two points per end won.
Matchups for the A, B, C and D finals were then determined by the order of finish in each pool. The B final saw the Terry Wilson rink of Canora come out on top over the Len Bazarski foursome of Buchanan. In the C final, Vern Schick and his teammates of Good Spirit won over Bob Kolodziejski of Canora. And in the D event matchup, the Zeno Gulka rink of Canora bested Taralee Bazarski and her foursome from Buchanan.
The bonspiel included a fun competition where the challenge was to freeze to the ham. To win a ham, the rock had to touch the ham without the rock or the ham leaving the rings.
“Every team picked off one ham each,” said Wilson. “It was a really fun challenge which showed off some deft touch.”
It seems hard to believe, but the curling season is rapidly winding down and so are the opportunities to enter a team in a bonspiel. In what will likely be the final bonspiel of the season, the windup ‘spiel is tentatively scheduled for March 27-29.
