For the first time in franchise history, the Waywayseecappo Wolverines are headed to the second round of the MJHL’s Turnbull Cup Playoffs.
Jase Wareham was the difference again, turning aside 38 of 39 shots to backstop the Wolverines to a 3-1 win over the Dauphin Kings in Game 4 on Thursday, completing a dominant four-game sweep on home ice.
Noah Oughton opened the scoring in the first, Dylan Duzan delivered the game-winner in the second, and Cole Hunter sealed it with an empty-netter late in the third. Wareham’s shutout bid was spoiled in the final minute, as Rylan Gage scored with just 41 seconds remaining.
The sweep serves as redemption for Waywayseecappo after last year’s playoff loss to Dauphin, when the Kings eliminated them in five games.
The Wolverines now await their next opponent, which will be decided once the Steinbach–Portage and Niverville–Winkler series wrap up.
Elsewhere Thursday night, the Virden Oil Capitals also punched their ticket to the semifinals in emphatic fashion.
Bryce Bryant exploded for four points—two goals and two assists—while Dysen Drake added a goal and two helpers as Virden rolled to a 7-2 win over the Neepawa Titans, finishing off another four-game sweep.
Braxton Burdeny made 17 saves in the victory, while Carson Wright, Bryan Laing, Colton Worthington, and Austin Osiowy also found the back of the net for the Oil Capitals.
