STURGIS — Members of the Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Club attended the 33rd Tavria Dance Festival held in Regina from March 19 to 22.
The club members performed a total of 10 dances in the four-day event.
Kateryna Shepertycka was the adjudicator, with 40 years of experience as a dance performer, educator and choreographer. She is the founder of the Ottawa School of Ukrainian Dance and artistic director of the Svitanok Ukrainian Dance Ensemble.
There were over 600 dances and more than 800 dancers at the festival.
The intermediate group performed a Poltava and received a score of 87 and silver medals. They also danced a Hutzul and scored an 84 and bronze medals. Group members were Will Prestie, Josie Moekerk, Blake Beatty, Emily Belesky and Nicholas Chalupiak.
The junior group performed a Poltava and scored an 89 and silver medals. They also performed a Transcarpathian dance and scored an 85 for silver medals. Group members were Brinley Robinson, Hailey Seghers, Stetson Checkowy, Everleigh Anaka and Hudson Babiarz.
The senior group performed a Poltava, received a score of 89, and won silver medals. They also danced a Bukovina for a score of 89 and silver medals, and a Polissia dance for a score of 88 and silver medals. Dancers were Lily Beatty, Eva Romanchuk, Lindy Romanchuk, Maycee Johnson and Karlie MacDonald. MacDonald did not dance the Polissia dance.
Solo performances were done by Eva Romanchuk, who danced a Lemko dance for a score of 90 and a gold medal, and she also performed a lyrical dance for a score of 89 and a silver medal.
Lindy Romanchuk danced a Sailor Character dance that received a score of 89 and a silver medal.
Club members will be attending the Yorkton Kalyna Festival from April 30 to May 3, and the club’s own spring dance concert is scheduled for May 9 at 2 p.m. at the Sturgis Composite School.
