KAMSACK — The last 20 of the 60 quilts promised to the Kamsack Nursing Home were delivered by members of the Heart and Home Quilting Club on April 14.
This is part of the club’s commitment to have “a quilt on every bed” at the nursing home, said Lise Rochefort, club o-ordinator, who explained that the quilts are all single-bed quilts that measure 50 inches by 70 inches and contain batting and flannel so that “they’re warm and do not easily slide off the bed.”
All members of the club have been making the quilts, Rochefort said. The quilters chose the patterns and while the batting and flannel were purchased by the club, most of the other fabrics used were donated.
“We have been very lucky receiving the fabrics.”
Rochefort said that this year, club members are concentrating on making quilts for babies.
A member donated a bunch of panels of children-themed material to be used for the quilts that will measure 36 inches by 48 inches, she said.
During the past two years, the club donated 164 baby quilts, averaging 80 a year, she said. “We’re aiming for 100 quilts this year.”
On April 14, the club donated 22 quilts in the area to the Kamsack medical clinic, Stepping Stone and the Cote Rehabilitation Family Centre.
The club sent Natal Intensive Care Unit quilts to the Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon, which also asked for some babies’ quilts, she said. Donations that helped to purchase the batting and flannel for the quilts were from Sas-Kam Sportsman, Family Pharmacy, TD employees, Bullock Health Services, P & J Plumbing and SaskTel.
