LINTLAW — Gwen Olshewski of Lintlaw is spearheading a project that is close to her heart. Following a vision from Mozart Sympawthy Animal Sanctuary, she and committed volunteers who share the same passion have decided to fundraise with the hopes of building a feed station to feed, live capture and fix or neuter and adopt unwanted cats or dogs. The program will help control the population with less unwanted babies being born.
“It is a long-term solution with the Village of Lintlaw council in agreement with building a feed shelter in the Village,” stated Olshewski. “I have seen firsthand people dumping unwanted kittens that were placed in cardboard boxes in the Village or along the roadside. It is heartbreaking to see such animal cruelty and I hope that this project will help the animals in need and help control the population,” she said.
Mozart Sympawthy Animal Sanctuary was founded by Veronica Hermiston in June 9, 2021 with the focus on providing safe, loving, permanent homes for unwanted cats and dogs.
The program was established to help control the cat and dog populations that the Hamlet of Mozart overran.
It relies on donations and volunteer support to provide vet care, foster programs and community outreach. They work in collaboration with other animal welfare organizations, such as SOS Prairie Rescue and SCAT Street Cat.
Since the program began it has rescued 4,000 animals and has never refused anyone’s help with dealing with animals. The sanctuary is located at the residence of Hermiston and she has invested in creating a place where animals can recuperate after surgery until strong enough to be adopted or released.
