In an announcement on Tuesday, the league confirmed it will shift its regular-season calendar to begin on Victoria Day weekend, while also introducing a revamped playoff system designed to increase late-season drama and reward top teams.
Beginning in 2027, the CFL season will officially kick off each year on Victoria Day weekend, aligning the league with the unofficial start of summer in Canada. The move is part of a broader effort to position the CFL as the centrepiece of the country’s summer sports calendar.
Commissioner Stewart Johnston said the league is building its schedule around long weekends, creating marquee moments from May through Thanksgiving.
“All summer long, the CFL will be front and centre, exactly where it belongs,” Johnston said. “We’re establishing CFL long weekends to create can’t-miss events for fans.”
The updated schedule will feature key touchpoints, including Canada Day weekend, the August long weekend, Labour Day, and Thanksgiving, while also shifting the Grey Cup earlier in the fall. The Grey Cup will now be played on November 7, allowing for more games in warmer weather and improved playing conditions.
The league is also introducing a significant overhaul to its playoff structure, adding four more postseason games and placing a greater emphasis on regular-season standings.
Under the new format:
- The top two teams in each division will be guaranteed at least two playoff games
- Division winners will have a chance to earn a bye to the Grey Cup semi-finals
- Teams seeded 5 through 8 will compete in play-in games
- A minimum of two playoff wins will be required to reach the Grey Cup
The postseason will also feature division-less re-seeding after the opening round, opening the door to new matchups and potential rematches deeper into the playoffs.
“More games. More drama. More entertainment,” Johnston said. “We’re raising the stakes so every game carries real consequences.”
The CFL worked alongside the CFLPA to integrate the new playoff format into the current collective bargaining agreement, ensuring players share in the benefits of the changes.
CFLPA executive director David Mackie called the agreement a positive step forward.
“It represents a meaningful step forward that supports both player compensation and the continued growth and excitement of the league,” Mackie said.
The league also unveiled its 2027 calendar, highlighted by:
- Combine season beginning in late February
- The CFL Draft is set for April 13, followed by the Global Draft on April 14
- Training camp opening April 24
- Regular season kicking off on Victoria Day weekend
- Playoffs beginning October 15
- The Grey Cup is scheduled for November 7
With a schedule built around summer traditions and a playoff format that increases both opportunity and urgency, the CFL is betting on a more engaging product from opening kickoff to championship day.
The changes mark one of the most significant structural shifts in recent league history — and one that could reshape how teams approach both the regular season and the road to the Grey Cup.
