CANORA – Earth Week, which took place from April 18 to April 26, was the focus of the On the Spot Poster Making Contest held at the Canora Golden Age Centre on April 19.
The contest was hosted by the Canora Seventh Day Adventist Church, with a theme of “Earth Care, Community Share” presented as a focus for artists.
Kathleen Young welcomed those in attendance, a mixture of adults and children, and opened with a prayer.
“Thank you Lord for this day, the wonderful sunshine, and that we can share our talents in celebration of Earth Week. Amen.”
Participating artists had two hours to compete their posters, but not everyone needed that much time. Even though art supplies were provided, artists were free to bring their own supplies. Artists were given the freedom to work by themselves, or collaborate in teams of two or three.
Poster themes included:
“Save the water, earth, animals, plants.”
“Recycle.”
“Care for our planet.”
Three judges carefully deliberated after viewing the 14 posters that were submitted. Judging criteria was:
- 40 per cent relevance to theme
- 40 per cent creativity and precision
- 20 per cent originality
When the votes had been tallied, three winners were selected:
- Overall first place: the team of Sophie Monich, Antonia Gallego and Camila Atehortua
- Under 12 winner: Mia Leonor
- 12 and over winner: Mataya Ball
