PREECEVILLE — The talents of students from across the area were showcased in piano, vocal, speech arts, band and solo instrumentals during the week-long Parkland Music Festival, held between the communities of Preeceville and Sturgis from April 20 to April 23. The festival concluded with a concert that featured 18 performers at the Preeceville Trinity United Church on April 26.
Miles Russell was the master of ceremonies for the afternoon program. “There are many volunteer hours that go into making this festival,” he said. “The talents of many youth shone all week brightly, and we were very fortunate to be part of such a great showcase of talents,” Russell said.
Scholarships were also presented, and there were 18 performances at the final concert.
During the concert, Maycee Johnson of Sturgis was first with a piano selection, The Milky Way, followed by Mia Angela Leonor of Canora with piano selections, Come, Thou Almighty King and Sunset at the Beach.
Michael Chorneyko of Norquay gave a piano performance to Mozza Mouse. Following on the piano was Cedar Quezada of Canora, performing Dance of the Aborigines.
Catherine Chorneyko of Norquay played A Summer Day on the piano.
Lochan Rice of Canora and Hailey Seghers of Sturgis played a piano duet to Busy Little Bee.
The Preeceville School Grade 7 students, instructed by Dallas Burym, performed a choral speech to Coyotes and Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf.
Briley Friday of Preeceville performed on her clarinet with a selection named Four Short Pieces, accompanied by Jillian Rice on piano.
Chengtian Huang of Canora performed a piano selection, Crimson Maple.
Samuel Korney of Preeceville performed a piano selection to Sailboats in the Wind.
David Halteman of Pelly performed I Vow to Thee, My Country on the trumpet.
Lloyd Nokinsky of Norquay played Cool Joe on the piano.
Halo Tourangeau of Kamsack gave a clarinet performance to Alleluia from Exultate Jubilate.
Kyler Ruado of Canora performed a solo piano performance to Boogie Woogie Bear.
Oscar Vaughters of Canora performed a piano solo to Moris Mouse Goes Roller Blading.
Kaylee Ruado of Canora performed a piano solo to Freddie the Frog.
Jonah Christianson of Preeceville performed a piano solo to Mist.
Olivia Ivanochko of Preeceville concluded the concert with a saxophone solo to It’s a Raggy Waltz.
Scholarships for piano, choral speech, singing games and band were then presented by various presenters.
Recipients for piano were Jonah Christianson and Samuel Korney of Preeceville; Mia Angela Leonor, Cedar Quezada, Rayleen Young, Lowell Rice and Chengtian Huang of Canora; Catherine Chorneyko, Anna Chorneyko, Lucy Chorneyko and Lloyd Nokinsky of Norquay; Hailey Seghers and Maycee Johnson of Sturgis; Elaine Sorestad and Olivia Sorestad of Buchanan; and Cassandra John and Claire John of Yorkton. Cassandra John also advanced to provincials in Saskatoon.
Piano medal recipients were Eve Barber of Preeceville; Zoey Daku, Lochlan Rice, Kaylee Ruado, Kyler Ruado, Oak Quezada, Cypress and Oscar Vaughters of Canora; and Michael Chorneyko of Norquay.
The Preeceville School Grade 7 students and Hailey Seghers of Sturgis received a scholarship for vocal and speech arts.
Scholarship recipients for band and instrumental were the GSSD Senior Band; the GSSD Parkland Jazz Ensemble; Briley Friday and Olivia Ivanochko of Preeceville; Brody Nelson of Norquay; Halo Tourangeau of Kamsack; and David Halteman of Pelly.
The Four Four’s Ensemble of Zia Dela Torre, Cruz Jaeb, Lindy Romanchuk and Lakyn Seerey, all of Sturgis, received a scholarship.
Stanley Prokulevich of Sturgis received a band medal.
