POINTS NORTH, SASK. — Saskatchewan’s government says it was a black bear that a 27-year-old man encountered near a remote northern airstrip before his death.
The Ministry of Community Safety says in an update that a civilian euthanized the bear before officers responded to the attack last Friday near Points North Landing, 700 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
Points North Landing, a company that provides trucking and air freight services to Northern Canada and operates an airstrip, says the man was transported by helicopter to its site after the attack.
The ministry says the Saskatoon-based Western College of Veterinary Medicine has completed a necropsy on the black bear.
It says the Conservation Officer Service and the Wildlife Human Attack Response Team continue to investigate.
The RCMP is also looking into the death.
