YORKTON — Local radio station GX94 has launched its annual spring tradition, "Supper in the Field," to reward hardworking farm families across Saskatchewan and Manitoba during the high-pressure seeding season. The program delivers fully catered hot meals and prize packages directly to seeding crews, allowing them to stay focused on the field during long shifts.
The contest addresses the demanding nature of the seeding season, which requires area producers to navigate long hours, dusty environments, and unpredictable weather windows. By delivering these hot meals, the program celebrates the resilience of local farming families while emphasizing the crucial economic and cultural impact of agriculture on regional rural communities.
Week one winners: The Becker family
The first delivery of the season went to fourth-generation farmers Brian and Jason Becker on their historic 1912 homestead. The duo manages a large-scale operation comprising 3,000 acres of cropland and 500 head of cattle.
To handle the massive workload, the family utilizes a unique international staffing strategy, hiring agricultural workers from Switzerland and the Netherlands via online platforms.
"We have two couples that help us… basically found them on the Internet, like Internet dating basically," noted Jason Decker, adding that the arrangement has been highly successful.
Despite heavy regional moisture and standing water in area fields, the Beckers capitalized on their sandy soil conditions to start planting wheat and canola.
"Everybody has just gotta pick and choose fields that are a little higher and a little dryer," Jason explained.
