Five notable plays
- On a first-quarter first-and-10 from the Roughriders’ 42-yard line, Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. overthrew receiver Vyshonne Janusas, the ball picked off at the Roughriders’ goal line by a diving Nelson Lokombo, who played as Saskatchewan’s starting safety.
- On Calgary’s next series, facing second-and-20, Adams found James Philpot in a gap in the secondary between veteran defensive backs Kerfalla-Emmanuel Exume and DaMarcus Fields, opening the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown throw.
- Recently signed receiver Juwann Winfree caught the same pass twice in the second quarter, recovering his own fumble from mid-air after the ball popped out of his hands when he was hit from behind on the initial catch.
- Also in the second quarter Roughriders 2026 first-round draft pick Malcolm Bell made his first pass knockdown in the Green and White, going airborne to knock a 25-yard Josh Love throw away from Kaylon Horton near midfield.
- A 13-yard catch on third-and-10 by Regina Thunder running back Peter Boersch with 30 seconds left in the game, extending the Riders’ drive and setting up quarterback Brayden Schager’s 20-yard TD run on the next play from scrimmage.
They said it
“Just no points on the board. I think we gave up, what, two touchdowns there? I was on the field all day so I feel like I'm a part of that, so I want to keep them out the end zone, whatever I could do to help that, and just get in our details. Play better all around. It's the little stuff. We had an OK day, but there's always room for improvement.” — Roughriders defensive back JuJu Hughes on Monday’s game, where he registered six defensive tackles and one more on special teams, as well as his goals for Saturday’s preseason finale against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
“Whether it's draft picks or guys you sign you can get your hopes up, but I think anybody that's been around long enough, at the end of it, these guys got to prove it, right? So, sometimes (it’s a guy) maybe that could have been in tough who ends up making the team, and then on the flip side there's guys you're really excited about, and then they don't make it. So at the end of it man it's spot the ball, go play and we'll find the best ones to help us.” — Roughriders head coach Corey Mace on the evaluation process as training camp goes on
“I like the waggle 'cause it gives us a little bit of speed, especially (for) a slot guy and a fast guy like myself. I'm able to get that head start. It gives you a little advantage. But I love that it's a passing league. I mean, we're throwing the ball and I absolutely love that, benefits us. I'm not the biggest guy so blocking is something that I like to do, but it's a little bit more difficult for me, but the fact that it's a passing league is really the most ideal for me.” — Newly-signed American receiver Mathew Sexton on his early impressions of Canadian football after making five catches for 78 yards Monday
“Limited mental errors, playing like your hair's on fire and ultimately make the plays that come to you. And the great ones find ways to make them sometimes when it's not supposed to be their play. It's the greatest job interview ever.” — Mace on what’s going to help distinguish the players who ultimately make the team
