CANORA – Canora puzzle enthusiasts have found a new outlet for their passion, as the Canora Speed Puzzle Competition was held at the Golden Age Centre on April 30.
The event attracted both young puzzlers and those who are “young at heart.”
Kathleen Young, the host for the evening, opened with prayer.
“Thank you Lord for sunshine and good weather, finally. Thank you that we can gather together, maybe make some new friends. Thank you for this opportunity tonight to work together as teams and support each other on these puzzles. Amen.”
The first challenge of the evening was for everyone to pick their puzzle partners and choose team names, which turned out to be quite imaginative and clever, including: The Puzzlers, Fast Puzzle Pieces, Team Fidget, Daddy’s Day Out, The Mini’s, Puzzle 2 (squared), and Puzzle Masters.
All puzzles were wrapped in plain brown paper, so no one new which puzzle they were choosing.
The children did 100-piece puzzles, while the adult puzzles were 300 pieces. When the smoke cleared, the kids champion was the team known as The Mini’s.
The adult racers were timed, and three teams achieved the impressive feat of completing their puzzles in under an hour. The winning team, by the slim margin of about two minutes, was Daddy’s Day Out in a time of just over 53 minutes.
The evening of fun was sponsored by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Canora Public Library.
