MELVILLE — City council has approved a new Downtown Façade Improvement Grant Program, authorizing administration to launch the initiative within the existing downtown revitalization budget.
The program is designed to encourage reinvestment in commercial properties and improve the appearance and vibrancy of the city’s core.
The grant will provide up to $5,000 per approved project, reimbursing 100 per cent of eligible exterior improvements such as storefront upgrades, painting, signage, lighting, accessibility features and restoration of heritage elements.
No matching funds are required, a change made in response to business feedback that cost was a major barrier to participation.
The policy was developed after extensive public and stakeholder engagement, including a community-wide revitalization survey and a targeted survey of downtown business and property owners.
Both surveys showed strong support for façade improvements, with residents identifying deteriorating and vacant buildings as key obstacles to downtown activity and investment.
More than half of business respondents indicated they would apply for funding.
Administration says the program aligns with the city’s strategic priorities by supporting economic development, enhancing community appearance and preserving Melville’s small-town heritage character.
With council approval now in place, the city will finalize program materials, promote the grant to downtown owners and begin reviewing applications once the program launches.
