MELVILLE — City council has approved the installation of a new accessible curb ramp at the Vanier Drive entrance to Vanier Park, with construction set to begin this summer.
The decision follows a resident’s formal request highlighting long-standing safety and accessibility concerns at the popular neighbourhood park.
In a letter submitted earlier this spring, Melville resident Braden Tubman described the challenges created by the continuous curb at the park entrance.
Over his six years living nearby, he witnessed children struggling to lift bikes and scooters over the curb — sometimes resulting in falls — as well as adults using mobility aids and parents with strollers or wagons having difficulty entering the park.
Tubman emphasized that a simple curb ramp would improve safety for all ages and abilities while supporting easier movement between the neighbourhood and key community destinations, including the regional park, pool, St. Henry’s Schools and Melville Comprehensive School.
