CANORA – The first Decoration Day was held on June 2, 1890, a celebration of the veterans who fought in the 1866 Battle of Ridgeway which was the first Canadian Battle consisting exclusively of Canadian enlisted men and officers.
The Legion's primary role is to remember and honour deceased veterans and to support living veterans and families as needed. This memorial is often overlooked. It is a commemoration for Canada’s earliest conflicts (such as the Boer War or the Northwest Rebellion) and is considered the second most important day of remembrance after Nov. 11.
This service of remembrance for veterans has been an annual event for the Canora Legion Branch. We will continue the tradition at the Canora Community Cemetery where we will hold a brief ecumenical service located at the Royal Canadian Legion Monument on June 7 at 2 p.m. (14:00 hours).
We ask the public to join us with the intention to thank, honour and remember our veterans in a similar fashion that was done during the original Decoration Day service by placing wreaths at the Monument and then everyone will proceed to the grave-sites, and place a flag/poppy/flowers or a decoration of your choice voicing each name and stating “We remember them.”
What better way to remember them than to have many appreciative local people go there to say it – eternal promise made; eternal promise kept.
This in hopes that our future generations will know it and remember them.
Once the service has been completed we shall have a time of fellowship at the Legion Dugout, 303 3rd Ave E; southeast kitty corner to the Elementary School.
Lest we forget.
