SHELLBROOK — Residents in the southern portion of the RM of Shellbrook have been ordered to evacuate as the Lobstick wildfire continues to spread and threaten communities in north-central Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) shared the evacuation order on May 29 after it was issued by the RM of Shellbrook.
“The Rural Municipality of Shellbrook has issued an evacuation order for residents in the south area of the RM due to spreading wildfire," the alert states.
The order applies to all residents south of Shellbrook, but does not include the town of Shellbrook. Municipal officials said affected residents would be contacted directly.
Residents in the evacuation area have been instructed to leave immediately and gather essential items, including medications, important documents, identification, clothing and basic supplies. The municipality also advised residents to secure their homes before leaving.
“Do NOT delay evacuation,” the RM stated.
“Do NOT return until officials declare it safe.”
A reception and evacuation centre has been established at the Elks Hall, located at 103A Railway Avenue West in Shellbrook. Evacuees are asked to report to the hall upon arrival for assistance and registration.
The municipality said updates would be posted as more information becomes available and urged residents to share the evacuation notice to help notify others.
The evacuation order comes as wildfire conditions continue to deteriorate in the area.
A wildfire emergency advisory alert has also been issued for the hamlet of Holbein and areas south of Highway 3.
According to the Provincial Emergency Communications Centre: “A wildfire emergency advisory alert is being issued by the RM of Shellbrook due to a wildfire that has serious potential to cause emergency situations for the public.”
The advisory urges residents to be prepared to act if an evacuation becomes necessary.
“Residents in the above listed areas are to prepare and be ready to take action should an evacuation be required,” the alert stated.
The public is also being asked to avoid unnecessary travel in the area, follow the directions of local authorities and “close doors, windows and vents, and take all necessary precautions.”
Earlier on May 29, Shellbrook Fire and Rescue warned that the Lobstick wildfire had crossed the river in multiple locations, increasing concerns for nearby communities.
“Be evacuation ready,” the department posted on social media.
