UNITY — The 43rd annual Unity Western Days kicked off once again with the traditional roast beef supper, introduction of the rodeo queen contestants and highly anticipated announcement of the Citizen of Year, which went to Sheena Weber.
Weber volunteers for many youth organizations, and often behind the scenes. She has been the current president for the Unity Skating Club board for the past seven years, then switches over to the grassroots co-ordinator for Unity Minor Ball, a role she has held for three years. She spearheaded sponsorships for the organization for the past two years, along with coaching or managing baseball teams as well. Weber has also coached the junior NBA basketball team, and in her spare time, she can be seen throughout the halls of St. Peter’s School, volunteering as a parent when the student council needs another set of hands.
She has also played many major roles within the Unity Community Daycare board, including president. In her nomination, Jessica Gerein said Weber has organized many of the daycare’s fundraisers, including the Duelling Pianos, as the current fundraising coordinator. She has been working hard to find sponsorships for the new building and has put in the groundwork for summer programming at the daycare.
“Unity has so many deserving people for this title, so I am honoured to have been nominated and chosen. I was quite emotional when I heard I was nominated. I don’t volunteer for the recognition; I love being involved within our community in many different ways and working alongside so many great volunteers,” said Weber following her win.
Weber continues to work part-time with Autism Services through the Saskatchewan Health Authority, while also raising her four children, Willoh, Kaegan, Wynsor and Kyland, alongside her husband Cory.
“At times, it does get busy, but I have an amazing husband who always supports me and whatever I sign up for. We are teaching our kids from a young age the importance of being involved within our community so they understand, most of the time, when Mom has ‘another’ meeting. It’s funny because when they look at the calendar at what meeting I have, they know if that group has quick meetings and I’ll be home before bedtime or if they should say goodnight before I leave, as some meetings run longer,” she added.
