The 11th edition of the SJHL Prospects Draft proved to be another successful showcase of Saskatchewan hockey talent on Tuesday, as teams from across the province added the next generation of players to their organizations.
The draft featured two rounds of 2011-born players followed by six rounds of 2010-born prospects, with only Saskatchewan residents eligible to be selected. The annual event remains a cornerstone of the league's efforts to keep the province's top young players developing close to home.
The La Ronge Ice Wolves held the first overall selections in both age groups and opened the day by taking Meadow Lake forward Kacy Turberfield with the top pick in the 2011-born draft. Later, La Ronge used the first overall selection in the 2010-born draft to choose Arlo Barclay.
SJHL Commissioner Kyle McIntyre said the draft has become one of the league's most important initiatives.
"The SJHL draft is an integral part of keeping the 'S' in the SJHL," McIntyre said.
"Our goal with our 'stay here, play here' program is to provide more opportunities for Saskatchewan kids to stay in Saskatchewan, so that our players' families and friends can watch their growth and development without having to stray too far from home."
McIntyre said the draft reflects the league's commitment to developing homegrown players and ensuring Saskatchewan athletes have a pathway to junior hockey without leaving the province.
"The SJHL is a Saskatchewan league for Saskatchewan kids inside the province of Saskatchewan," he said.
All eligible players had to be Saskatchewan residents, previously undrafted, and not among the auto-protected players designated by SJHL clubs from their local centres.
This year, the league expanded its auto-protection regulations to include players living on farms or acreages within an SJHL team's trading area, provided they have spent the majority of their school years and minor hockey careers in that community.
Broadcast live from IKS Media's Regina studio and streamed across the SJHL's digital platforms, the draft once again highlighted the depth of Saskatchewan's grassroots hockey system.
