REGINA – A special weather statement has been issued for Regina, Moose Jaw and several Rural Municipalities on funnel clouds today.
The special weather statement stretches east to west across the southern portion of Saskatchewan to the US border, with the area extending up to and including Yorkton, up to Last Mountain Lake and Lake Diefenbaker, and to just north of Leader.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today. They state a low pressure system over southern Saskatchewan will support the development of weak thunderstorms early this afternoon. Some of these may develop funnel clouds.
They state that these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms, and is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance this could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado, which could be strong enough to cause damage or toss debris.
If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada. The public is urged to monitor Environment Canada for weather updates throughout the day.
