CANORA – “All of our CCS athletes performed very well and represented the East Central Region and Canora Composite School very positively.”
Coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen said they were pleased with the effort and the showing of the four CCS athletes who competed at track-and-field provincials in Saskatoon on June 5-6.
Maddy Dutchak earned a bronze medal in junior girls discus with a top throw of 26.25m in a field of 28 competitors.
Also achieving a top-10 finish was Kasen Heshka, placing ninth out of 16 runners in the intermediate boys 400m in a time of 58.02 seconds.
Madison Dutchak qualified for provincials in four intermediate girls events, with the following results:
• 80m hurdles: 23rd out of a field of 28 in 15.59 seconds
• Intermediate Girls 400m: 20th out of 28 in a personal best time of 1:08
• Intermediate Girls 200m: 20th out of 28 in 29.42 seconds
• 4 x 100m relay: 13th out of 14 in 54.61 seconds
Fighting through an ankle injury suffered at districts, Danielle Dutchak competed in a pair of junior girls events at provincials:
• 80m hurdles: 24th out of 28 competitors in 15.99 seconds
• Triple Jump: 25th out of 28 with a top jump of 8.50m
The coaches reported that the weather at provincials in Saskatoon was pretty much perfect for track-and-field.
“It was partly sunny both days with very little wind and no rain.”
One of the biggest jobs of the coaches is to provide perspective for the competitors.
“Often athletes get down on themselves for not making top 10 in their events. But they have to remember there are approximately 15,000 students per grade in Grades 9-12 in Saskatchewan. So when our students are placing 23rd, we always remind them that they are 23rd in all of Saskatchewan and that is a really big deal! All of those other students didn't even qualify to be at provincials.
“As coaches, we hope that they are as proud of themselves as we are of them. We can't wait to see what next season brings and how many will be representing CCS in Regina at Provincials next year,” concluded coaches Lowes and Kitchen.
