KAMSACK — With summer approaching, it was time to plant the flowers at Trackside Gardens.
This year “may be the most we’ve ever planted,” said member Audrey Horkoff.
The planting took place on June 9. Trackside Gardens Committee members will continue to take care of the gardens, namely weeding and watering, throughout the rest of the summer on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
The garden beds are assorted by colour, with members taking charge of a particular bed for the season, though in practice upkeep is shared. Horkoff has been the carekeeper of the white garden for close to two decades.
“You kind of adopt these things and it evolves,” she said.
The Trackside Gardens Committee formed after CN Rail pulled out of Kamsack. The area was “allowed to sort of go to waste. And turned into basically an area for garbage. It was a mess,” said Horkoff. Then the horticultural society came in and cleaned it up, “they put in these flower beds, the crushed rock… they did all the basic start-up work.”
While many of the original members have since passed on, “it seems like we're always able to find a few replacements to keep it going.”
