CANORA – The Canora Supers are in a battle at the top of the South East Senior Baseball League standings. Recent results have them in first place but just two points ahead of the Parkland Pirates, who have a game in hand.
June 13: Supers 9 Saltcoats Lakers 4 at Sturgis
For the first time ever, the Canora Supers hosted a regular season baseball game in Sturgis, in conjunction with the Sturgis Rodeo Days. It was the first senior baseball game played in the community in approximately 40 years, according to Supers Coach/Manager Greg Andreychuk, and it did not disappoint local fans as Brendon Landstad of the Supers hit a grand slam late in the game to extend the Supers lead and win 9-4.
“Four Sturgis products suited up in this game: Bryker Smith at catcher, Shae Peterson at pitcher, Chaz Jaeb at second base, and Xage Will in the outfield,” said Andreychuk. “Peterson went the distance on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Smith drove in a run with a double and added a stolen base, while Jaeb and Will each drew a walk and scored a run.”
Peterson, Dylan Toffan, Ian Quewezance each singled, while Evan Rostotski had two singles to help the cause.
“The Supers would like to thank the Sturgis Rec Board for getting the field into great condition, and to the fans who turned out to support the team,” said Andreychuk. “It was an enjoyable experience, and the team would love to play in Sturgis again in 2027.”
June 14: Doubleheader Vs Grandview Lakers
Back at Al Sapieha Field in Canora the next afternoon, the Supers swept both ends of a doubleheader over the Grandview Lakers. Game 1 was a 5-1 victory, while game 2 was a come-from-behind 13-12 win.
In Game 1, Kody Rock started on the hill, and was in mid-season form. He gave up just three hits and one run, while striking out 14 to pick up the win.
“Dylan Toffan chipped in with a solo home run, Ian Quewezance had a pair of singles. Bryker Smith and Evan Rostotski also had singles to pace the offence,” said Andreychuk.
“In this game, Kayden Quewezance, son of Ian, made his Supers debut in centre field, and it was the first father/son duo in many years to start a game for the Supers.”
In Game 2, the Supers found themselves trailing big, only to make a furious comeback until a Dylan Toffan two-run homer put them up 13-12, and they held on for the win.
Kody Rock led the way offensively with two singles and a double, while Toffan had a home run and a double. Kayden Quewezance picked up his first ever Supers hit, with Bryker Smith and Rostotski contributing one hit apiece.
June 18: Parkland Pirates 7, Supers 1
The Supers travelled to Melville to take on the Parkland Pirates, but this was a game where things just could not click for the Supers, according to Andreychuk.
“A few too many mistakes ended up biting the team in the rear end in a 7-1 shellacking.
Chaz Jaeb started on the mound, and kept the Supers in it after three innings, trailing only 1-0. But in the bottom of the fourth, the Supers committed two errors to start the inning, and the floodgates opened shortly after, as the Pirates scored five runs in the inning, all unearned, to put the game out of reach.”
Dylan Toffan pitched the final two innings for the Supers and allowed just one earned run.
Nathaniel Minhinnick led the way for the offence with two singles and an RBI triple, while Kody Rock had a pair of singles. Kholton Shewchuk, Shae Peterson, and Trae Peterson each singled as well.
These results leave the Supers with a record of six wins and two losses on the season.
The next action is a trip to Saltcoats on June 29 to tangle with the Lakers.
The next opportunity to take in a home game comes on July 2 when the always tough Parkland Pirates meet the Supers in Canora at Al Sapieha Field.
