Saskatchewan Roughriders' rookie Daniel Wiebe scored his first career CFL touchdown in Week 4 against the Toronto Argonauts, but he does not want to rest on his laurels.
"I've definitely pictured it; I've wanted to play pro ball for as long as I can remember," Wiebe told the media. "So growing up in Sask, it's what you want to be doing. To be able to do it means a ton and I want to keep building."
The Riders lost to Toronto 40-34 and Wiebe finished the game with two receptions for 48 yards and one touchdown. Due to injuries to James Letcher Jr. and then Samuel Emilus, he had the opportunity to return two punts for 19 yards.
Wiebe handled punt returns for the University of Saskatchewan from 2021 through 2025. He recorded 71 punt returns for 688 yards and two kick returns for 40 yards in his time with the Huskies.
That type of versatility is why Riders’ special teams coordinator Kent Maugeri is a fan of Wiebe. He discussed his two punt returns against Toronto.
"I tell you what, he's tough, and there's some kids, you just know it's not going to be too big for him at all. He's ready and he's going to do something special," Maugeri told Teagan Witko and Dave Thomas on the SportsCage.
"You can put him on the cover team; his versatility is great for me, especially as his special teams coach. I could have him block, I could have him run, I could have him tackle and return. He's smart, tough and dependable. We need more guys just like him."
His former Huskies teammate, Nick Wiebe, now his teammate with the Riders could not have been happier for Wiebe's touchdown.
"I mean my phone was blowing up after the game. Everyone's congratulating him for a touchdown and I wasn't even on the field for it. But it was pretty cool to watch Dan," Nick told Dave Thomas.
"I've spoken about it before in the media as well; I don't think it's surprising to anybody who's been around him, who's seen the kid work, who knows how locked in he is on football. So not surprising to anybody who knows him, but an awesome moment for the kid."
Saskatchewan travels to Ottawa to take on the Redblacks on Friday.
