CANORA – The Canora Golf Course closed June 29 due to approximately four inches of rain from the evening of June 28. This left many, many low areas that were just drying up to become full of water again. Cart paths were impassable and a few greens were surrounded with water. An additional four to five inches fell throughout the week to follow, causing almost every hole to become completely unplayable.
The grounds crew had numerous pumps running to empty low lying areas. Course Superintendent Darcy Sliva had the pumps running constantly, which means even though he went home for some rest, he was back periodically in the evenings and nights to refuel and move the pumps and hoses. Five-gallon pails were used to empty sand bunkers by hand. The course has two dugouts that are now at maximum level and overflowing. A drone video can be viewed on our Facebook page.
The Off The Rails Canteen held a wing night with hourly drink specials and had various specials throughout the weekend when the course was closed.
We’d like to acknowledge those who offered pumps when we asked for help and to those who supported the Canteen’s specials! We realize the majority of the town and surrounding area experienced flooding in their homes. The Clubhouse team and Grounds Crew are locals. We are living the same situation so the kindness to offer much appreciated support and encouragement was very welcomed.
The golf course plays a key part in Canora's summer tourism, bringing in people from all over Saskatchewan and Manitoba as they spend their holidays in the Parkland. Preserving its beauty has been achieved thanks to Darcy’s dedication.
We re-opened the morning of July 7, ahead of Darcy's estimated date. Carts are being allowed in hopes customers will use caution and we will monitor any damage.
