CANORA – Rainouts have plagued the 2026 Southeast Senior Baseball League season, and the Canora Supers had to figure out how to play four games in the rainout week to complete their schedule on time. But as luck would have it, the weather finally cleared up, and some games were able to be played, albeit shortened ones, to finish the season, said Greg Andreychuk, Supers coach/manager.
Supers sweep week-long doubleheader
On June 29 the Supers headed to Saltcoats to take on the Lakers. With a 4-1 Canora lead in the bottom of the third inning, the rains settled in, and the game was called off.
“In years prior to COVID-19, this game would have been null and void, and would have had to be entirely replayed,” said Andreychuk. “However, it was discovered that during the pandemic, Major League Baseball decided to treat rain shortened games as suspended games. Baseball Canada also adopted this rule, and it has since been part of the official rules of baseball.”
Since the Lakers were coming to Canora the following Monday, July 6, the game continued and finished after five innings, and the regularly scheduled game, also five innings, was played immediately thereafter. The Supers would go on to win the suspended game 10-2, and then take the second game 4-1 to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Kody Rock of Canora threw all 10 innings for the Supers in Saltcoats and then in Canora. He surrendered just two runs on one hit with nine strikeouts to pick up the win in Game 1. In Game 2 he gave up one run on five hits with nine strikeouts once again to pick up the win.
Rock led the way offensively in Game 1 with a single and a double. Derek Palagian of Hudson Bay chipped in with a double, a walk, two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in. The offense put up four runs in the first, and four in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The Supers benefited from a patient approach at the plate, earning a total of 10 walks.
“In the second game, Bryker Smith of Sturgis had a leadoff single, followed by a Rock RBI double, and a run-scoring single by Chaz Jaeb, also of Sturgis, to give the Supers a lead they would not relinquish,” said Andreychuk. “Two more runs in the fourth inning gave the Supers enough cushion to cruise to victory.”
July 7: Doubleheader versus Pirates
The following evening the Parkland Pirates came to town. It was decided that since the teams had two games to play in Canora, with little time left in the season, that they would play two games, each four innings long, to finish their head-to-head schedule that evening.
Shae Peterson of Sturgis started Game 1, and limited the damage to two runs in the top of the first inning after the first four Pirates reached base.
“Peterson would induce a double play, then a ground out to escape,” said Andreychuk.
But the Pirates ended up with six runs on 12 hits to win Game 1 by the score of 6-3.
“The offence had plenty of opportunities to score, but just couldn't get that clutch hit in the end.”
In Game 2, Chaz Jaeb of Sturgis started on the hill and was in mid season form. He gave up just one run on two hits to earn the 3-1 win. The Pirates loaded the bases in their last at bat, but Jaeb struck out the final batter of the game to escape the jam and lock down the victory.
Bryker Smith had two doubles and a run scored to lead the offence. Kody Rock and Tyler Stewart, a Parkland Expos call-up, each had a single. Stewart, along with Bostin Smith, another Expos call up, made their Supers debuts on this evening, and were both key in starting the rally in the bottom of the third inning in the second game.
Playoffs excitement next
The Supers finished the regular season in first place with a record of nine wins and three losses, and will take on the Saltcoats Lakers in the opening round of the playoffs.
Game 1 was slated for Monday, July 13 in Canoray. Game 2 was scheduled for Saltcoats on July 15. The third and deciding game, if necessary is set to go back in Canora on July 17.
“The team looks forward to some exciting playoff action,” concluded Andreychuk.
