MELVILLE — Conexus Credit Union has reopened its Melville branch following an 18-month renovation project that credit union leaders say reinforces their long-term commitment to the city and surrounding rural communities.
The project modernized the downtown branch with upgraded technology, improved accessibility, redesigned member spaces and a new 24-hour exterior ATM. The renovated branch officially reopened Tuesday during a community celebration attended by members, employees and credit union officials.
“This renovation represents an important investment in our members, our employees and the future of Melville,” Conexus CEO Celina Philpot said.
“We are proud to introduce a modern, welcoming space that enhances the banking experience while supporting the evolving needs of our members.”
The work was completed in two phases, beginning in early 2025. The first stage focused on renovations to member-facing areas, including a redesigned layout, façade improvements and installation of the new ATM. The second phase upgraded back-office spaces for employees.
Philpot thanked members and staff for their patience during construction, noting the branch remained open throughout the project despite disruptions.
She said the renovations were designed to create a more comfortable and accessible environment while supporting both traditional and digital banking services.
“One of the most visible improvements is our new exterior ATM,” Philpot said. “It offers enhanced safety, greater visibility and the convenience of 24/7 service right here in downtown Melville.”
The reopening follows the Jan. 1 merger of Conexus, Cornerstone and Synergy credit unions under the Conexus name. Philpot said the investment demonstrates the organization’s continued commitment to rural Saskatchewan.
“Following our merger, our commitment to rural communities remains very strong,” she said. “This investment demonstrates our confidence in Melville and surrounding areas and our dedication to serving our members for years to come.”
Board Chair Heidi Schofer said the renovation reflects the credit union’s focus on both serving members today and planning for future needs.
“As a board, one of our key responsibilities is to make decisions about where to invest our money as members,” Schofer said during the reopening ceremony. “Our job is not just to look at the here and now, but what could be, what should be and where we would like our credit union to go.”
Schofer said maintaining a downtown location was a deliberate decision intended to support local businesses by bringing residents into the city centre for financial services and other errands.
“People need to come downtown,” she said in an interview following the event.
She noted the branch's location near City Hall, the post office and other businesses helps generate activity in the downtown core, while Philpot said a strong Main Street remains vital to the community.
“We want to be part of the main street and to welcome people to the downtown,” Philpot said.
Credit union officials also highlighted the project's economic impact, noting local contractors were involved in the work where possible.
Schofer said the renovation sends a broader message about the role credit unions continue to play in smaller Saskatchewan communities.
“A lot of businesses, it would be easy to just close doors, move locations, downsize, and that’s not the case with credit unions,” she said. “This building is a really great symbol of investment in Saskatchewan, in community, in rural Saskatchewan and in the people that live here.”
Conexus Credit Union manages approximately $17 billion in assets and serves more than 200,000 members through 57 branches in 50 Saskatchewan communities. The organization was formed through the amalgamation of Conexus, Cornerstone and Synergy credit unions earlier this year.
