The latest Manitoba crop report has been released.
Northwest
Milder temperatures this week along with windy conditions in the Northwest region. Soil crusting continues as soils continue to dry. Field repair and infrastructure repair continue in the region. Field access remains a challenge in some areas where washouts occurred, however many roads are becoming passable again. Fall rye and winter wheat are mostly mature and harvest has started in parts of the region. Pre-harvest applications have started in winter cereals. Spring cereals range from milk to soft dough stage. There are some later seeded fields that continue to catch up. Field peas range from the R5 to R6 stage and are moving towards maturity. Canola fields continue to range in stages, with most crops in the podding stage. A few later seeded fields and fields under excess moisture continue to catch up. Fields that experienced excess moisture have patches of delayed growth. The most advanced soybean crops have moved into R4 stage, with the remainder of the crop following behind.
Southwest
Cooler temperatures this week, with daytime temperatures in the mid 20’s and nighttime temperatures in the single digits. Flood-affected areas are beginning recovery efforts, and producers are preparing land for the coming year. A week of good weather helped crops ripen and brought harvest closer. Most crops are turning faster than expected. Harvest has started in fall rye. Desiccation of winter wheat has started, and harvest will begin soon in some areas. Spring cereals are ripening quickly under dry, warm conditions and some desiccation may begin by the end of the week. Barley is ripening, and some producers may start swathing soon. Soybeans are in the R5 to early R6 stages. The crop looks promising, and additional moisture will help achieve full yield potential. Desiccation has started in pea fields, and harvest will likely begin this week. Most canola is in the pod-filling stage, and some early crops are showing slight colour change. Late-seeded fields are also moving out of flowering. Corn is in the blister stage (R2). Sunflowers are at approximately R5.9 to R6 stage. Early seeded flax is showing late boll colour change, while late plantings are in the green boll stage.
