KAMSACK, Sask. — Four teachers new to the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, and one returning, began work at the school Sept. 2 when the 2026-27 term began.
Wendy Shabatoski
Wendy Shabatoski, who had worked as a Grade 5 to 12 teacher at the KCI from 2003 to 2023, returned to the school as the facilitator for the Following Their Voices program, a Saskatchewan Government initiative for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students to help them improve their educational outcome. She is also a graduation coach.
Born and raised at Buchanan, Shabatoski graduated from the Canora Composite School and obtained her bachelor of history and bachelor of education degrees from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003.
Shabatoski has worked as the principal of the Bear Stream Hutterite Colony school for students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 for the past three years.
She and husband Trevor, a farmer, are the parents of three children, ranging in age from 15 to 25 years.
Shabatoski says she enjoys gardening, travelling, reading and spending time with her family. She said that a personal highlight of her career was in 2014 when she accompanied a group of 20 school teachers from across Canada, who attended receptions at Juno Beach in France which commemorated events of the Second World War.
Devyn Grimsrud
Hired to teach English to students in Grades 7, 8 and 11, Devyn Grimsrud was born in Florida to Canadian parents and was raised in Regina Beach. She graduated from Lumsden High School in 2020 and received a bachelor of secondary education from the University of Regina in 2026.
She said she loves reading, cooking, working out and playing volleyball, having been a member of the University of Regina Cougars volleyball team and served as the team’s captain. She enjoys tending to her dog, who is named Togo.
Jordyn Thomas
An intern working with Zac Fedoruk until Christmas, Jordyn Thomas is the daughter of Karie and Gord Thomas of Kamsack. She is coaching the senior boys volleyball team and will be coaching the senior girls basketball team when the season begins.
A 2022 graduate of the KCI, Thomas is attending the University of Saskatchewan studying towards bachelor’s degrees in kinesiology and education, expecting to graduate in May.
Saying she loves sports, Thomas is an avid fan of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team. She is pleased to have been a member of the girls basketball team that played at the Hoopla championship and a banner attesting to her prowess in golf hangs in the KCI gym.
Jonah Dyck
Hired to teach physical education to students in Grades 5 to 12, Jonah Dyck was born in Estevan and raised in Carlyle, where he graduated from the Gordon F. Kells High School in 2024.
Dyck obtained a bachelor of kinesiology degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2025 and worked as a personal trainer and strength coach at the university.
A fan of “any sports,” who was named the athlete-of-the year while in high school, Dyck runs, works out in the gym and is a “huge Oilers fan.”
Mackenzie Lautamus
Hired as a Grade 6 teacher, Mackenzie Lautamus was born and raised in Yorkton where she currently lives with her husband, former Canora resident Scott Anderson, and four children, aged two to nine years.
A graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton in 2016, Lautamus received a bachelor of education degree in pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 from the University of Regina in 2021. She worked as a substitute teacher in Yorkton, Springside and Melville and spent the past two years teaching Grade 6 at the Norquay High School.
Lautamus said she enjoys camping, spending time with her family and building connections with people.
