YORKTON, Sask. — Rather than throwing out a wobbly chair, broken toaster or torn pair of jeans, Yorkton residents will soon have an opportunity to give those items a second life.
The Yorkton Repair Café returns Sept. 12 at the Yorkton Public Library, where volunteer fixers will help repair a variety of household items free of charge.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, located at 93 Broadway St. W., and is part of a growing movement aimed at reducing waste by encouraging people to repair items instead of replacing them.
Residents can bring in everything from small appliances and furniture to clothing and household goods.
Repairs will be completed by volunteers who will do their best to restore items to working condition. There is no fee to attend, although donations are accepted.
Appointments are encouraged and will be prioritized, but walk-ins are also welcome.
The event is organized with support from the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council, Affinity Credit Union, the Yorkton Men's Shed and the Parkland Regional Library.
In addition to seeking items to repair, organizers are also recruiting volunteers. People with skills in areas such as tinkering, sewing or general repairs are invited to join the team of volunteer fixers.
Appointments and volunteer registration are available through the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council website.
Repair cafés have become increasingly popular as communities look for ways to reduce waste, keep usable items out of landfills and share practical repair skills with others.
The Yorkton event offers residents an opportunity to save money, extend the life of everyday items and learn repair techniques from experienced volunteers.
