STURGIS, Sask. — Dancers from the Barveenok Ukrainian in Sturgis and the Norquay Rosa Ukrainian Club joined together to attend a workshop led by Christina Oleynik (Sturgis Club), Dan Kozak of Dauphin, and Mikaela Twerdoclib (Norquay coach) in Sturgis on Sept. 13.
The workshop was free for dancers aged 8+ who wished to learn some new skills and have some fun. The day was split in half for both a girls workshop and a boys workshop.
The workshop for girls focused on dance steps and turns, and for the boys it focused on trick skills.
The Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Club started up on Sept.16th with regular classes.
Choreography classes for all groups except beginners will be held on Sept. 26 and Sept.27. Christina Oleynik secured Dan Kozak to choreograph the club’s dances this year.
Christina Oleynik is the new instructor for the Barveenok Club and has been dancing for 19 years. She spent 16 years dancing with Yorkton Troyanda and an additional three years with Canada’s National Riding and Dancing Cossacks Dauphin. During her time with the Cossacks, she had the opportunity to perform at Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival.
Christina is excited to be the instructor for Barveenok for the upcoming dance season. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge and passion for Ukrainian dance with the young dancers while helping them develop their skills, technique, and confidence.
