The Yorkton Terriers came out on top in the first rematch of last season’s CANTERRA SEEDS Cup final, knocking off the defending champion Flin Flon Bombers 6-3 on Saturday night.
Alex Morrison led the Terriers’ offence with a goal and two assists, while Drew Heil scored the eventual game-winner. Peter Godley chipped in with a goal and an assist, and Mathys Morrissette, Nathan Ramos and DJ Brass also found the back of the net.
Goaltender Callum Creig turned aside 31 shots to earn the victory, while Ryder Mucha paced the Bombers with two goals and an assist.
Flin Flon finished its four-game, five-night road trip through the Bunge Division with a 2-2 record. The Bombers have played five of their first six games away from home and will now enjoy a stretch with six of their next seven at the Whitney Forum.
In Melville, Noah Kraus was outstanding between the pipes, making 45 saves to lead the Millionaires to a 2-1 win over the Humboldt Broncos.
Cole Brown opened the scoring late in the first period, before Grady Carmichael added a power-play goal at 2:24 of the second to give Melville some breathing room. It proved to be the game-winner, as Broncos captain Connor Miller scored with 7:25 remaining in regulation to make things interesting.
Humboldt netminder Brady Holtvogt also had a busy night, stopping 42 of 44 shots in the loss. Kraus has now allowed two goals or fewer in four of his five starts this season.
Elsewhere, the Estevan Bruins picked up their first win of the campaign with a convincing 7-3 victory over the Nipawin Hawks.
Drew Beasley and Steven Steranka each scored twice and added an assist, while Lochlan Tetarenko recorded three points. Seven different Bruins finished with multi-point efforts. Nipawin captain Mason Karkochuk responded with a pair of goals in the loss.
For the second straight night, the Warman Wolverines rallied to force overtime against the Melfort Mustangs, but once again, Melfort came away with the shootout victory. Tristin Ziola scored the lone goal in the skills competition. Luke Brunen made 35 saves for Warman, while Luke McKechnie stopped 18 shots to secure the win for the Mustangs.
