CANORA, SASK.- Runners from Canora continued their cross-country season at Saltcoats Regional Park on Sept. 25 under ideal conditions according to coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen, winning two medals and earning seven top-10 finishes.
“It was an absolutely beautiful day for a cross-country race,” said the coaches. “The warm sunshine with a little breeze made it perfect to spend the day outside. The location of this race at Saltcoats Regional Park is probably the most authentic "cross-country" race we have in our area. The runners are running with the garter snakes, gopher holes, and through the bushes. The running distances are more exact and the hill at the end gives a final challenge to finish off the race.”
Following are the results for Canora athletes.
In the Over 16 Girls 4km run, Kaelyn Shukin finished fourth among seven runners.
Reid Kitchen placed eighth in the U16 Boys 4km race out of 14 runners.
Karter Shukin ran a personal best to finish third among 13 runners in the U15 Boys 3km run.
Drew Kitchen also posted a personal best in the U14 Boys 3km race, good enough to finish sixth in a field of 31 runners.
Among 55 runners, four Canora competitors were involved in the U12 Boys 3km competition:
Trevor Keyowski, 17th; Felix Huang, 34th; Jacob Prychak, 46th; and Tyler Menton, 48th.
Aliannah Herriges placed 10th out of 48 runners in the U12 Girls 3km run.
In a field of 75 runners in the U11 Boys 2km race, Chance Unick finished 14th, Lowell Rice placed 18th and Anikin Nordin was 46th.
The U11 Girls 2km race attracted a field of 54 runners. Keira Owchar finished third, Mae McTavish placed eighth, and Ava Sliva was 30th with Atlin Godhe close behind in 31st.
In a large U10 Boys field of 90 runners, Ryley Woicichowski finished 35th.
In a field of 77 runners in U10 Girls, Chloee Abbott and Emily Mentanko did well to place 13th and 15th respectively.
With Saltcoats in the rear-view mirror, Canora runners shifted their focus to training for districts at Jaycee Beach in Yorkton on Oct. 7, where Grade 9 to 12 students would have the opportunity to qualify for provincials.
