YORKTON, Sask. — A new heart function clinic in Yorkton is expanding access to specialized cardiac care for patients across east-central Saskatchewan, reducing the need to travel to larger centres.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) operates the new Heart Function Clinic, which provides outpatient services for people living with heart failure and other complex cardiac conditions.
The clinic aims to help patients manage their conditions through ongoing monitoring, early intervention and specialized support, improving quality of life and reducing avoidable hospital admissions.
“The opening of the new Heart Function Clinic in Yorkton reflects our government’s commitment to putting patients first,” Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said.
“By connecting patients with expert cardiac care in their own community, we are improving access by ensuring the right care is available in the right place, at the right time.”
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalization among older adults and often requires ongoing monitoring and support from multiple health-care providers.
“This clinic expands access to specialized services in one location, reduces the burden of travel and creates a more coordinated experience for patients to access the care they need, closer to home,” said Brenda Schwan, the SHA’s vice-president of integrated rural health.
The clinic serves Yorkton and surrounding communities across east-central Saskatchewan. Its team includes family physicians, a registered nurse, a pharmacist and an administrative assistant.
Patients can access the clinic through referrals from physicians, nurse practitioners and other health-care providers.
Appointments are offered twice a month, with support for care co-ordination and follow-up available Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
