Weyburn extended its winning streak to six games with a 7-1 victory over the Estevan Bruins on Friday.
The Red Wings enter the new week with a 9-3 record and 18 points and offence has been rolling, with 58 goals scored through 12 games, while the Red Wings have received contributions from throughout their lineup.
Pierce on Target, Karakochuk Is Cooking
Two names to keep an eye on early on in the SJHL goal scoring race are Weyburn's Callas Pierce and Nipawin's Mason Karakochuk, as both forwards continue to show their ability to find the back of the net.
Pierce’s scoring touch has helped fuel Weyburn's winning streak reaching 10 goals through 11 games including a hat-trick against La Ronge.
Karakochuk has also been making noise for the Nipawin Hawks. The forward scored twice in Nipawin's 8-1 victory over the Yorkton Terriers last Friday, helping the Hawks explode for six goals in the opening period and now sits with a league-leading 11 on the season.
North Stars Need to Find Their Shine
It has been a difficult stretch for the Battlefords North Stars, who are looking to turn the corner after a challenging start to the season.
Battlefords entered Sunday with a 2-6-1 record and five points, leaving the North Stars with ground to make up in the Nutrien Division. The club suffered a 7-2 loss to Humboldt on Oct. 10 before dropping an 8-4 decision to Warman on last Saturday.
The loss to the Wolverines was particularly difficult, as Warman erupted for six goals in the second period to take control of the game.
There is still a long way to go in the SJHL season, and early struggles do not determine how a team's year will finish. However, Battlefords will need to tighten up defensively, find more consistency and turn its better stretches into results.
Showcase returns to Saskatchewan
Some of the SJHL's top young talent will have an opportunity to shine on a bigger stage next month, as the Western All-Star Challenge returns to Saskatchewan.
The SJHL and Manitoba Junior Hockey League are joining forces for the third annual event, scheduled for Nov. 2–4 at the Martensville Recreation Centre. The showcase will feature two games between the SJHL Under-19 All-Stars and the MJHL Under-19 All-Stars, with eligible players born in 2008 or later.
The event is designed to highlight some of the top prospects from both leagues while giving them an opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of scouts and fans. The two leagues continue to work together to help players pursue post-secondary hockey opportunities, including U Sports, ACAC and NCAA programs.
