The Nipawin Hawks erased an early two-goal deficit before coming away with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Humboldt Broncos Tuesday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena.
Humboldt came out flying, building a two-goal lead in the opening period. Leo Seitz set up Ryan Ulmer to bury his fifth goal of the season.
Just over a minute later, the Broncos struck again on the power play. Connor Miller set up Jovan Sandhu in front, and Sandhu made no mistake for his third of the season, giving Humboldt a 2-0 advantage.
But the Hawks weren't going away.
Nipawin found its way back into the game in the second period, with Mason Karakochuk scoring his 16th of the season to cut the deficit to one.
The SJHL's top power-play unit then went to work, as Brock Evans fed Will Whitter, who found the back of the net to even the score at two.
After overtime solved nothing the game was sent to a shootout, the first for both teams this season. Miller was stopped on Humboldt's opening attempt before Karakochuk scored for Nipawin. Seitz was denied on the Broncos' next attempt, setting the stage for Evans to score the deciding goal and seal the Hawks' comeback win.
The victory extends Nipawin's point streak to seven games.
Connor Johnson finished with 37 saves for the Hawks, while Brady Holtvogt stopped 28 shots for Humboldt. Holtvogt's shutout streak ended at 117 minutes and five seconds.
Humboldt now sits at 8-4-1-1 and will close out October on the road Friday against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, while the Hawks return to action on Friday in Melville against the red-hot Millionaires.
