PELLY, Sask. — Residents of Pelly are once again facing the loss of their community grocery store after a fire destroyed the business on Oct. 31, marking the second time in less than two years that the store has been lost to a blaze.
Fire crews responded overnight, but the building was destroyed. The loss is expected to have a significant impact on the village and surrounding rural area.
The store's destruction has left many residents concerned about access to services in the community, particularly seniors and those with limited transportation options. It was one of the few remaining businesses in the village.
Pelly mayor and fire chief Trevor Auchstaetter said it is too early to discuss the cause of the fire, as an investigation is expected to take place.
The fire represents another setback for the community, which rallied around the business after the previous fire on Dec. 31, 2024.
The grocery store's loss is expected to be felt throughout Pelly and the surrounding area as residents make alternative arrangements for groceries and other essentials.
