CANORA, SASK.- In their first game action of the young season, the U18 Canora Cobras hosted a five team round-robin tournament at the Canora Civic Centre on Oct. 24-25. The other teams making the trip to Canora were the: Humboldt Broncos, Naicam Vikings, Yorkton Terriers and Park Posse (a combined team with players from Porcupine Plain, Archerwill, Kelvington and Rose Valley). Each team played the other four once over the weekend.
Even though the Cobras went winless in their four games, head coach Adam Vangen said at this stage of the season, wins and losses aren’t his primary concern.
“The focus of the preseason tournament is to get the team on the ice, work out lines, and give the team a chance to play some games,” said Vangen. “It helps us start fresh for regular season. We didn’t win any games in the home tourney but it was still successful. We had a chance to work on our power play, penalty kill, and see where everyone fits.”
Vangen said he saw some positive signs over the weekend, and also recognized that the Cobras offense needs to improve when the regular season starts and it’s important to win games.
“In the tourney the boys saw that if they got the puck deep and got shots on net they could score goals and good things would happen."
The Cobras have discovered that hosting this tournament this early in the season makes it easier to attract other teams, as later on more of them are focused on playing in big city tournaments.
The 2026/27 roster for the U18 Canora Cobras includes: Ashton Strelioff, Caden Doogan, Cameron Sznerch, Declan Lowe, Kasen Heshka, Mason Reine, Parker Kraynick, Shiloh Leson and Wade Vangen of Canora; Emmett Lukey, Nate Korpusik, Ryder Severson, and Westin Lindgren of Norquay; Reein Godhe and Zarin Godhe of Buchanan; Bostin Smith of Sturgis; Carson Chernoff of Veregin and William Parsons of Springside
