REGINA, Sask. — SGI is urging drivers to plan a safe ride home in the November Traffic Safety Spotlight.
The choice to get behind the wheel while impaired can be fatal, SGI says.
In Saskatchewan, a significant number of drivers are getting behind the wheel while impaired, the organization reports.
Between January and September of this year, traffic enforcement partners issued more than 4,700 roadside suspensions to impaired drivers and drivers who refused to give a roadside breath sample in Saskatchewan. This is the highest rate of roadside suspensions for impaired driving in the last five years over the same period.
In 2025, impaired driving was a factor in over 670 collisions, 380 injuries and 43 deaths. This is higher than the five-year average of more than 640 collisions, 361 injuries and 39 deaths related to impaired driving each year (2021-25).
"Impaired driving is a choice that puts every road user in danger," said Karol Noe, executive vice-president of Vehicle and Driver Programs at SGI.
"Drivers always have an option to find a safe ride home, whether it’s using a taxi or ride share service or staying the night at a friend's place. We're all responsible for the choices we make."
Bystanders can report impaired driving through the Report Impaired Driving program. They're encouraged to call 911 if they suspect there's an impaired driver on the road.
