There’s something about the end of April that flips a switch. The snow (hopefully) is behind us, the days are stretching out, and suddenly it feels like the calendar is moving at double speed. Summer isn’t just coming—it’s practically knocking on the door.
So when do you actually start making those summer plans?
For some, the answer is “months ago.” If you’re a camper, chances are your weekends are already locked in. Campsites get scooped up fast, and the seasoned planners know that if you wait too long, you’re left trying to piece things together instead of relaxing by the fire like you pictured all winter.
For others, summer plans revolve around people more than places. Weddings, reunions, backyard BBQs—those dates start filling in quickly. Before long, you’re looking at a calendar that went from wide open to “how do we fit it all in?”
And then there’s that layer of summer planning that hits a little closer to home. This year feels a bit different for me. With my oldest heading off to university in the fall, there’s a real sense of wanting to slow things down and make the most of the time we’ve got. It’s one of those milestones that sneaks up on you. One minute you’re teaching them the basics, the next you’re helping them pack for a whole new chapter.
So naturally, I’m looking at summer a little differently. Less about cramming it full, and more about making it count.
In our case, that probably means a lot of time on the golf course. He loves golf, and honestly, there are worse ways to spend a summer day than walking the fairways, sharing a few laughs, and maybe keeping score… or maybe not. Those are the moments that stick.
Whether your summer is already mapped out down to the weekend, or you’re more of a “we’ll see where it takes us” kind of planner, there’s something to look forward to. Even the simple stuff—long evenings, road trips, or just sitting outside doing absolutely nothing—has a way of recharging you.
Because at the end of the day, summer isn’t just about what you plan. It’s about how it feels.
And ready or not, it’s just around the corner.
