YORKTON – There was a familiar buzz in the air at local McDonald’s restaurants as McHappy Day kicked off in high gear. It is the one day of the year where a simple meal makes a massive difference.
Building on last year’s $20,000 contribution to the community, the local team set out to reach even greater heights in 2026. It was a day of high energy, big goals, and even bigger hearts—where every smile was free of charge.
A community coming together
For the crew and customers in Yorkton and Melville, McHappy Day is more than just a busy shift—it is a cornerstone of their community identity.
"McHappy Day is truly a celebration for us — not just as a restaurant, but as a community," said Vishal Sukhadiya, owner and operator of the local franchises. "It’s a day when customers, crew, and families come together to support an important cause: helping families stay close to their children during difficult times."
While the restaurants saw a significant surge in foot traffic, the atmosphere remained focused on the mission. "It is definitely much busier than a typical day, but it’s also one of the most meaningful days of the year for our team," Sukhadiya added.
He noted that the pride felt by the staff comes from real-world ties: "Many of our guests from Yorkton, Melville, and the surrounding areas have personally benefited from Ronald McDonald House, and those connections make the day especially impactful."
Matt Bissonnette, representing McDonald’s Canada, travelled to Yorkton to join the celebration. “It is so important for us to support Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) as our forever founding partner," Bissonnette shared. "Last year, we raised a record $11.2 million across the country and we are out to beat it again this year. Thank you to the entire community of Yorkton for supporting the brand.”
Supporting growth in Regina and beyond
The stakes are higher this year as RMHC expands its footprint in Saskatchewan. A new Ronald McDonald House is currently under construction in Regina, and a portion of this year’s funds will be vital in seeing that project to completion.
Closer to home, the proceeds from McHappy Day also provide a lifeline to several essential local organizations: SaskAbilities, SIGN, BGC Yorkton, and the Melville Food Bank.
Investing in local youth and families
Erin Roussin, Director of Operations at BGC Yorkton, noted that funds received will directly support programs for children and youth. To remain accessible, BGC Yorkton provides nearly all of its programming free of charge, making this fundraiser a critical part of their mission.
"It’s a powerful show of community belief in the work we do and the young people we serve," Roussin said. "These funds will directly bolster programs that offer safe spaces and mentorship, reinforcing to local children that their community stands firmly behind them."
The Society for Involvement, Good Neighbours (SIGN) also expressed excitement as a beneficiary. As a cornerstone of local social services, SIGN operates 23 programs, ranging from family counselling to childcare. Last year alone, over 6,000 individuals accessed their services.
"Funds raised will support programs including free counselling, parenting programs, youth life skills, and our Early Learning and Before and After School programs," said CEO Andrew Sedley. He credited Sukhadiya’s ongoing commitment to the region’s well-being. "We are so thankful to have community-minded business owners like Vishal who see the value of what we provide."
Smiles in the drive-thru
Drive-thru customers were greeted with big smiles and cold samples as SaskAbilities representatives Brittany Garbutt and Deanna Stroshein joined the festivities. The pair reported a fantastic response from the public.
For SaskAbilities—which supports individuals within a 100-km radius of Yorkton — the event is a vital partnership.
“We are honoured to be a part of this,” Stroshein noted, “as it allows us to continue our mission of providing essential programs and services to local families.”
How to help
Residents are encouraged to visit their local McDonald’s on McHappy Day to participate. Whether through the purchase of menu items, socks, or direct donations, every contribution helps the team reach their goal of surpassing the $20,000 milestone.
"McHappy Day truly shows what can be accomplished when a community comes together," Sukhadiya concluded. "And we’re proud to be part of that."
