SASKATCHEWAN — Members of the SaskToday news team combined to win four awards and were up for other recognitions through the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA).
Recipients were announced during an online ceremony May 12.
SaskToday swept the top three spots for Best Agricultural Coverage: Single Story or Feature. Azure McGonigle of the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald was first for “Ag Safety Week: the unheard crisis on today’s farms”, Angela Brown of the Battlefords Regional News-Optimist was second for “Battlefords farmer urges more options to control gopher problem”, and Liz Jacobson of the Preeceville Progress was third for “Time-saving harvest innovation introduced by Sturgis agricultural producer”.
McGonigle also finished first for Best Saskatchewan Recreational Story or Series of Stories for “Hands that help, hearts that care through Wilkie Community Club”, and was third for the Salute to Veterans Award and Best First Nations Coverage Award for “The soldiers Canada almost forgot. A spotlight on Indigenous war heroes”.
Brown was second for Best Business Writing for “Casino Showdown? Two groups unveil separate plans for the Battlefords”.
Also, reporter-photographer Averil Hall of the Battlefords Regional News-Optimist was first for the Best Saskatchewan Arts or Cultural Series of Stories for "Tipi Teachings: what is a moss bag?" and Best People Photo for "Running for Emory"; second for Best Page Design for the "Medieval Faire and Artisan Market" and Best Photo Essay of the Year for "CCA Finals Rodeo held at Access Communications Centre"; and third for Best Black and White Photo for "Zombie Bride", Best Sports Photo for "Four Corner Boxing" and Photographer of the Year.
