YORKTON — Yorkton Conservation Officers are monitoring a black bear sighting reported near the local landfill on Thursday, May 14.
Local field officers confirmed they are aware of the animal's presence and stand ready to deploy if further sightings occur. Officials emphasized there is currently no indication of an immediate risk to public safety.
Because black bears are a natural part of the Saskatchewan landscape, the Ministry of Environment reminds residents to take necessary precautions to prevent property damage or close encounters.
Secure property attractants
Conservation officers state that the most effective way to prevent conflicts is to eliminate food sources. Residents should ensure the following items are securely stored:
- Garbage bins and compost
- Garden waste and pet food
- Barbecues and grease traps
- Bird feeders
Wildlife safety protocols
If you encounter a black bear, provincial wildlife guidelines advise staying calm and following these steps:
- Maintain distance: Do not approach or attempt to scare the animal away.
- Retreat calmly: Back away slowly while speaking in low, calm tones.
- Avoid eye contact: Do not look directly at the bear.
- Create a detour: Give the animal a wide berth so it can move on naturally.
How to report
If a bear repeatedly enters a residential area or displays aggressive behaviour, residents should immediately contact the Turn in Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) line at 1-800-667-7561, or call the local RCMP detachment.
