STURGIS — The 2025 SaskMilk Sportsmanship Award for senior curling was awarded to the Sturgis Composite School senior boys' curling team.
Team members were Bracyn Konkel, Parker Ryczak, Avyn Seerey and Keltyn Konkel. Coaches Kristen Peterson and Cory Babiuk were acknowledged for their commitment to student athletes.
Dave Sandomirsky, executive director for Saskatchewan High Schools Athletics Association (SHSAA), was in Sturgis and made the presentation May 6.
The SHSAA’s Sportsmanship Award recognizes teams, coaches and student athletes who exhibit exemplary sportsmanship, integrity and fairness, along with a positive attitude in both winning and losing. The selection process looks at behaviour on and off the playing surface, team attitude, leadership, and interactions of team members, coaches and spectators at the championship.
"It is with great pride that I get to honour these four young men for their spirit and positive attitude. Whether they lost or won they should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves,” said Sandomirsky.
Each student received a carton of milk at the end of the assembly
The SaskMilk Sportsmanship Award is a prestigious recognition presented by the SHSAA and the Saskatchewan Milk Marketing Board to teams demonstrating exemplary character, respect and fairness at provincial championships. Winners receive a blue banner for their school and a milk-sponsored celebration.
The award recognizes teams that represent the high ideals of education-based sport, including behaviour, hospitality, and respect toward opponents, officials and hosts. This award is often decided by peers, officials and tournament organizers at the championship site.
