May long weekend is behind us and I would think the nasty weather should be too. Then again, if you’ve lived in Saskatchewan or Manitoba long enough, you know better than to trust May weather. Snow, cold wind, frost warnings and muddy yards on the May long weekend almost feel like a yearly tradition at this point.
You would think we’d be used to it by now. Every year we get teased with a few beautiful warm days, people pull out the lawn chairs, campers hit the highways, and then Mother Nature reminds us who’s boss. This year was no different with chilly temperatures and some pretty nasty conditions hanging around through the long weekend.
The good news? It finally looks like we’re turning the corner.
Looking at the forecast, temperatures are expected to climb into the 20’s by the weekend and, even better, nighttime lows don’t appear to be dipping below zero anymore. That alone feels like a huge victory. Maybe we can finally stop worrying about frost warnings and scraping ice off the windshield in the morning.
Spring might actually be here for real this time.
Now we can start looking forward to green lawns, leaves on the trees, evenings on the deck and all the summer activities we’ve been waiting for. After the long winter and stubborn spring we’ve had, I think we’ve earned a stretch of warm weather.
Of course, this is the Canadian Prairies, so I’m still not putting the snow shovel too far away… just in case.
