I knew it was coming. Every spring it happens, and every spring I act surprised. My wife has officially gone flower crazy again this year. I think she has visited every greenhouse within 300 km of Yorkton over the last few weeks. If there was a beautiful flower for sale, chances are it ended up riding home in our vehicle.
Don’t get me wrong, I love how it all looks once everything is planted and blooming through the summer. Our yard turns into something straight out of a magazine. The colors, the flowers, the full planters on the deck… it really does look amazing when it all comes together.
The problem is she started buying plants during the last week of April. That means for almost a month now, my dining room and living room have been transformed into a full-blown greenhouse. Everywhere you walk there are trays of flowers, watering cans, and plants lined up soaking in every bit of sunlight they can find through the windows.
Then there’s my daily duty on the nice days. Out they go onto the deck in the morning, and back in they come once the temperatures start dropping at night. Usually we don’t have to do this routine for so long, but spring has really dragged its feet this year. It feels like winter just refuses to leave Saskatchewan behind.
Thankfully, it finally looks like this weekend might be the big planting weekend. I know she’s excited to finally get everything planted and honestly, I’m excited too — mostly because I get my house back!
Once the flowers are planted, my job officially begins. I’m usually the one watering, deadheading, and helping keep everything looking good through the summer months. It’s actually something I enjoy. There’s nothing better than sitting outside on a warm summer evening surrounded by beautiful flowers and a yard that finally looks alive again after a long Saskatchewan winter.
To all the fellow green thumbs out there, happy planting season. Hopefully spring has finally decided to stick around for good this time.
